Dr Christopher Leyland is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at Newcastle University, where he leads the MA in TESOL. His research focuses on pedagogical interaction in second language learning and assessment, with particular expertise in conversation analysis, interactional competence, and classroom discourse. He is a co-investigator on the Taiwan–UK University Consortium project “EMI as a Pedagogy: A Comparative Study of Taiwan and the UK” (2026), a collaborative initiative led by National Taiwan Normal University that develops a shared framework for English-medium instruction through classroom-based research and international partnership. Through this project and recent academic visits to Taiwan, he is actively strengthening collaborative research, staff development, and joint publication between Newcastle University, NTNU, National Tsing Hua University, and the University of Edinburgh.
